Likely, you’ve come across this quote before:

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, then go do it. Because what the world needs are people who have come alive.”

—American Author and Theologian Howard Thurman

What makes me come alive is connecting with others from another culture. Worshipping in song. Getting my ideas across in words.

Or prepping something beautiful and photographing it to share with others.

Like the Hungarian crêpes I mentioned in the previous Museletter. It wasn’t enough for me to simply cook and eat them myself.

Oh, no, I had to take a picture to show you how yummy they are, so you’ll want to try them, too.

Fried palacsinta with strawberry preserves

My photographs also serve as a reminder of how very cool it is that God not only gives us the ability to do things we truly enjoy (Ecclesiastes 3:22).

He also provides opportunities to help others in the process (1 Peter 4:10).

So, what makes you come alive, my artistic friend?

Please keep at it.

And should you ever doubt the value or “rightness” of your creative calling, remember what God says about it.

Through the Bible, we learn that:

  • The very first mention of someone filled with God’s Spirit is not of a priest or prophet—but an artist, a maker of beautiful things.

See Exodus 31:2-5

  • Someone else needs the book, story, painting, poem, or word fitly spoken that God has assigned you to deliver.

See Ephesians 2:10

  • Encountering difficulties in your work that feel overwhelming can be the signal that you’re smack in the center of God’s perfect will.

See James 1:2-4

and

  • You, yourself, are a work of art, marvelously made.

See Psalm 139:14

⚡️LIVE YOUR UNIQUE CALLING

Each of us, positioned around the world, has a unique calling—a purpose, a life meant to be lived fully

If you ask me what I came to do in this world, I, an artist, will tell you: I came to live out loud.

— French Novelist and Journalist Émile Zola

“My calling is my way of being that is both best for me and best for the world.”

— American Author David Benner, The Gift of Being Yourself

“Everyone has his own specific vocation or mission in life; everyone must carry out a concrete assignment that demands fulfillment. Therein, he cannot be replaced, nor can his life be repeated; thus, everyone’s task is as unique as his specific opportunity to implement it.”

— Austrian Psychiatrist, Philosopher, and Holocaust Survivor Viktor Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning
